The world can get along without you pretty well, but you must, for at least a while, get along with, or within the world. The secret is to get along on your own terms, not other people's terms. Try thinking about the results of your actions but put those thoughts on a 'global' scale. What I mean by a global scale is that the things you do will affect all aspects of your life. Actions in your life are interdependent or related to everything else in your life. Things just don't happen in isolation. You can't 'get away' with anything because you will always know what you did or didn't do, and after all you are really the only one who cares about you and it's only you who has to live with the ultimate results. If you realize there are really no excuses, take the responsibility for what you do, you will love yourself and understand why you are what you are. The choice is yours."
